i can't believe it's already been a year since we officially started working on our new album. we're becoming the new guns n' roses i guess. we've never been the type of band to record an album in two weeks, but this time i think we really outdid ourselves.

after scrapping parts, re-recording many parts numerous times and overanalyzing every single detail, we finally have a solid structure. we have the skeleton. now we're working on the flesh.

we're currently focusing on finishing two songs. antoine and dan are polishing up the electronics and we'll be mixing this week, then we're off to los angeles for a little while.

we've still got lots of work fleshing out the songs. good music takes time to make. but let me get something straight. this album will blow your minds. you will all shit your pants. we will blow away any shit band standing in our way. we will destroy everything. literally. not in some ridiculous heavy metal kind of way, because this is in no way a metal album.

what we do is real. it's our souls. this music will become the defining point of our career. just wait and see. lots of awesome news and announcements coming along in the next couple months too. stay tuned.

The iKoRn staff wanted to give you more details about Deadly Apples, who Munky collaborated with on two songs off of their upcoming album. We recently contacted the band's singer, Alex Martel, and he was kind enough to take the time to answer some questions for us. Enjoy our exclusive interview!

Tell us more about Deadly Apples. What kind of guys are you and what should we expect from your live shows?

We're not your typical band. We're not here to please crowds or fit in. We do what we like on our own terms. In a time where most music is generic garbage, I think we bring something that's fresh and real. And our live shows are pretty intense.

You guys literally destroy many instruments during your live show. Why?

It doesn't happen as often as it used to, but sometimes things get out of hand. It's never planned, anything can happen at our shows. For me, performing live is not about four dudes getting up on a stage, playing some songs and getting off the stage. I see it as a psychological cleansing, a unique experience, very therapeutic. If it entertains people, that's great. But that's not why I do it.

The music industry is controlled by a few big labels and most of the big bands come from the States. Deadly Apples is an unsigned band coming from Canada, do you find it hard to compete against the system?

No, because we just do what we love and we write music that is meaningful, to us at least.
We don't care about trends and the thousands of shitty bands desperately trying to make it big, without having anything to fall back on. We all have other things in our lives. We all have bachelor's degrees. We all work in the music and film industries. So we're really just doing what we want to and we won't compromise for anyone. We're happy doing what we do and things are going great.

Why Deadly Apples? What's the story behind the band's name?

It just sounds like an interesting and intricate name. Kind of like Smashing Pumpkins or Nine Inch Nails. People make up their own stories or meanings, which is fine.

What is your favourite track from Infected and why?

Infection, because it was the last song written for that EP and to me, it really sets the vibe of that CD. Lyrically and music-wise. It's a good picture of the state of mind I was in at that time. And it's probably also my favorite to perform live.

Tell us a cool memory from when you guys toured with KoRn.

We haven't done a full proper tour with KoRn yet, but to me, I think it's the overall welcoming feeling. The whole band, crew and fans have been really nice and welcoming to Deadly Apples. It's really one big family and we're very fortunate to be a part of it. Also, watching Korn from the side of the stage every night is always a nice treat.

How did Deadly Apples get to collaborate with Munky from KoRn?

I've known him for a while. I used to travel a lot to see the band when I was a teenager and somehow constantly bumped into James. We kept in touch over the years and the first time we opened for KoRn, he watched our set from the side of the stage and really liked us. So fast forward to early 2010, we just asked him if he'd like to collaborate on the album and he was into it.

Munky worked on two songs from your upcoming album right? What are the names of these songs and what kind of vibe do they have?

The working titles are ''Further'' and ''Help'', I'm not sure what the real titles will be yet. The whole album has a very unique vibe, very catchy songs combining deep sounding electronics with harsh organic sounds. It's very different from our previous work. What you hear on the short video is basically the guitar riff, bass that you can barely hear and the acoustic drums, all clean and unmixed. So expect something very different.

Is it easy to make things work when collaborating with a musician who's not from the band?

It depends really. With James, it went very smoothly. It really felt natural, even though he didn't have much time to rehearse the songs. It's always interesting to write music and have someone else add his personal flavor to the song. When I listen to his riffs in the songs, it sounds like James playing, but not necessarily like Korn. It sounds like James' version of Deadly Apples, if that makes any sense. That's exactly what we wanted.

There are some rumours about some other artists working with you guys on the upcoming album, can you tell us more about that?

Can't tell right now, but stay tuned.

The release of the new album is set for 2011, any idea which month it could be?

No idea yet. We still have lots of work left before completing the album. Then, we'll have to shop it around and figure out who's going to release it.

Give us some ideas about the recording process of the album.

We're not your typical band that records an album in two weeks. We take a lot of time writing the music, trying things, experimenting with new gear, crafting the sounds, etc. We started recording some parts in Spring 2009. We officially started in January 2010, but we did many other things in between recording. We usually write as we record and we do everything ourselves. We have our own professional recording studio that we built in an old warehouse, but we also go to different studios sometimes to try new things. It's a very long and meticulous process, but it'll be worth the wait.

Do you find it easier to record vocals in the studio or sing live?
I wouldn't say easier, but I enjoy it a lot better live. It doesn't matter if I mess up. In the studio, it's a very meticulous process, because once it's released, it's out there forever.

What are the good and bad sides about being a musician?

If you're doing what you love, there's no bad sides. If you're in it for fame or money, good luck with that. You're better off with your job at Wal-Mart.

How did you start your career?

I was a huge music fan and just wanted to create my own music. I formed this band when I was a teenager and I didn't even own a microphone. Needless to say it was really horrible at first, but slowly I found great musicians, played tons of small shows in shitholes with even crappier bands, all the usual stuff a young band goes through. After a while, we became a professional band, started getting recognition, played huge venues and festivals, etc. It really started out of nothing 7 years ago, and here we are now. That's something I'm very proud of.

Are there any songs that you would like to cover someday?

We used to play a lot of covers when we started, but we're not really into that anymore. I'd like to play Man Next Door by Massive Attack sometime. Who knows?

First off, our friends at Heavy MTL are auctionning two guitars signed by members of Deadly Apples, Korn, Rob Zombie, Avenged Sevenfold, Hatebreed and many others. All proceeds are going towards the Canadian Cancer Society. Check out all the info here.

We're still working really hard on the album and it's shaping up very good. Gabbio recently re-recorded some bass tracks, Dan is currently recording additional guitars, Antoine is working on new keyboard ideas/electronic beats and I'll be tracking the few remaining vocal parts that need to be done.

We're also working on a secret project involving a great band that influenced us... you will hear the result by the end of the year. You can also expect a treat next week probably.

it's been quite a while since the last update. i've been doing vocals almost every night for over a month now. it was a long and meticulous process, but we're mostly done now and i'm happy with the results. it was a lot of work, and i have to give props to Daniel Pelletier for putting up with me the whole time -- i couldn't have done it without him.

i've also been working on Petite-Nation Rockfest 2011. we're shooting a documentary movie about the fest, which will include interviews with myself and other members of Deadly Apples -- stay tuned.

i'll try to keep posting updates about the new album. be patient. it'll be worth the wait.

well heavy mtl was awesome! great festival, great staff, great crowd, great interviews, lots of old friends, lots of new friends.

everyone is asking us when the new album will be out. right now, all the basic instruments (drums, guitars, bass) are 100% complete. we have been working on keyboards for a while. next week, antoine and i will be heading in a secluded area in the middle of nowhere to focus 24/7 on lyrics and vocals.

i'll have to revive lots of buried emotions and it will be hell... i'm tearing my heart open for this record. hopefully you'll enjoy the results.

NEW ALBUM AND RECORDING WITH KORN GUITARIST

Deadly Apples – Martel (vocals, samples, tambourine), Antoine Lamothe (drums, keyboards), Gabriel Maurice (bass), Daniel Pelletier (guitar) – have been working for several months on the band’s new upcoming full-lenght album. California band KORN’s James ‘Munky’ Shaffer recently collaborated with the band by recording guitar parts for two songs off the new album while in Maine.

«I have known James for several years and Deadly Apples shared the stage with Korn last year» concludes Martel. «This collaboration is the result of fruitful meetings in Toronto and New York – it is very heartening to see how much he believes in us and gives his time generously.»

The album should be completed by the end of the year.

Deadly Apples will perform at this year’s Heavy MTL, Montreal’s loud music festival promoted by Evenko (formely Gillett) which will take place at Parc Jean-Drapeau on July 24-25.

The band will once again share the stage with Korn, as well as Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold and many others.

I know you guys are recording a new album and aren't on tour, but you'll be playing some festivals this summer, including Heavy Mtl. That's pretty huge!

Yeah it's gonna be great. We're actually friends with James, the guitar player from Korn, so it's always great to be sharing the stage with them. They got me into music when I was a teenager and they're great guys, I have lots of respect for them. I always liked Rob Zombie, so it'll be great to share the stage with him for the first time, he's such a nice genuine guy and so is Joey Jordison. There's tons of great bands, it should be fun.

I've seen your live lights show, which is amazing, but I assume you'll be playing in the daylight?
Yeah that's pretty odd, I know. We did a couple of festivals where we played very early and it's a totally different vibe without the lights, it's harder to achieve the ambient experience we like to do, but I think we can pull it off. In a sense, the connection with the crowd is stronger because we can actually see their faces. We opened for Korn last year in New Hampshire in an amphitheater during the afternoon and it felt weird seeing 3000 faces staring at me. (laughs)

Not a lot of bands have the opportunity to play such big festivals. It must be quite different than playing small clubs and bars.
Small places can be fun sometimes, but usually it sucks (laughs). The sound is horrible most of the time, the lighting is terrible. I've been doing this for 8 years now and we've played so many crappy shows over the years, after a while you just start becoming selective and you stop wasting your time playing in shitholes.

You guys are known for often destroying gear on stage and taunting the crowd. What’s the story ?
There’s no story, it’s just things that happen sometimes. Anything can happen, it’s not planned. We’re not your typical band where you get up on stage, play some songs, then get off stage. When I get on stage, I’m not even there to play music or entertain people. I’m up there because it’s a psychological experience for me, it’s hard to explain. All my inner feelings get out and I become this beast.

Tell me about the acoustic set you have been playing since last year.
Actually we were invited to do a small Canadian tour with Blindoldfreak, which is the solo project of Alessandro Cortini of Nine Inch Nails. But what he does is basically sound experimentation with an instrument called buchla, so it wouldn't have made sense for a full-on heavy rock band to open for a one-man experimental project. So we built a stripped down electroacoustic set with only vocals, keyboards, tambourine and acoustic guitar. Later on, we added bass and a few other instruments.

That must be very different from your usual sets.

It is, but at the same time it's pretty much just an emphasis on the ambient aspect of our music. But it opened lots of doors in many different ways. Creatively, it really opened our minds even more. It also introduced our music to many new listeners that aren't into heavier sounding music. And obviously that inital tour turned a lot of Nine Inch Nails fans into us, which is great.

The artwork on the Infected EP is very mind boggling. What the hell is the cover image supposed to be? (laughs)

It is whatever you want it to be, really. Actually, I noticed that people see what they want to see, and you'd be amazed by the things people tell me. It was done by Antoine [Deadly Apples drummer and producer - ED.] and I really like it, lots of people got into our music just because they were initally curious because of the artwork. Everyone from Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit) to Jerry Only (Misfits) were really scratching their heads when they saw it.

On the song Infection, is that a shower sampling at the end and does that have anything to do with the cover?
No comment.

When you guys write music, are you trying to please fans of a certain type of music or do you not care about things like that?

We have to please ourselves, that's really all that matters. If you want to please others, then it destroys creativity. That's what all the radio bands are doing, using music as a business instead of expressing their creativity. Same goes for bands that follow trends, that want to be the flavor of the month. I just do what I like, what feels good and real to me. If other people like it or get it, that's great. If I'm able to move one single person in the world, that's flattering. But at the same time, who cares what other people think? As long as we're pleased and protect the integrity of our art, that's all that matters.

There's so many different scenes and subgenres these days that it's hard to keep up. You've got the deathcore scene, the post-indie scene, the electro pop-punk scene, etc. But I just can't figure out where you guys fit in all that.

We never really fit anywhere, but that's great. We just do what we feel like doing, I really don't give a fuck about what's in or what's not. We stand on our own, which means longevity. For instance, when the deathcore scene will end, all those bands will either die with it or jump on the next trend. And we'll still be there playing music that means something to us. But at the same time, it gets us a really broad audience. We've done shows with anything from synth-pop bands to death metal bands. We're not very popular with most metalheads though (laughs). They don't like artsy geeks like us, which is fine.

So tell me about the new album you guys are working on.
I think it'll blow people's minds. It's very catchy yet very experimental, avant-garde. It's different than Infected, it's better. It's less dark, less industrial I'd say. So many horrible cheesy bands are doing that and we really don't want to be associated with that garbage. Also, we grew up. It's more mature, I think we're really defining our own sound with this album. It's still Deadly Apples, but it's an evolution. Think of it as White Stripes meets Portishead meets NIN, if that makes sense.

Who's collaborating on the CD this time around?
Pretty much the same core team as for Infected, which is Antoine, Daniel Pelletier and me. Antoine has been writing a bunch of songs and ideas since last year and he's such an amazing composer. Gabriel also recorded all bass this time around and he's such an amazing bass player, he plays with all these jazz bands. We also worked a bit with Pierre Remillard last year at his studio and some of the takes will end up on the album. A few guest musicians are also playing on the album, but that's still a surprise for now. It's really exciting.

The record industry is in a bad shape right now and it’s harder for bands to make it big. What's your take on that?

Honestly, I don't really care about these things anymore. Making it big is an illusion and I'm beyond that. I mean, so many bands are just very clueless and it's saddening. I just want to experience great things while staying true to who I am. I always try to impress myself, to achieve great things. But I don't want to waste my time on things that I don't like. For instance, we only play the shows that we want to play.

i should really go to bed.

we are done recording in montebello. real drums, bass and guitars are all done. antoine will be working on keyboards for the next month or so. the songs sound amazing so far. dan's guitar work is still blowing my mind. you can really feel the emotion in his playing. simply amazing.

i'm still working on lyrics and worked a little bit on vocals with dan. the vocals should be recorded in early july after the rockfest. we will also be working with some guest musicians and see how that goes.

we will be playing some festivals this summer, so keep an eye on dates. it felt good to be back on stage at the show with blind witness. it reminded us what we're here to accomplish. this is where i belong.

and this will cure me.

escape from the studio... for one night

Deadly Apples will be joining Blind Witness on their Blizzard Ball Tour for one night this Sunday March 14 at Salle Gaston-Mandeville in Drummondville, Quebec.

We haven't played in a while and I have no idea how it'll turn out, but I'm sure it will feel good to destroy things and get out of the studio.

i guess it's time for an update. the recording of the new album is going pretty good. it is shaping up to be something quite unique. very catchy, yet very avant-garde.

so far, all real drums have been recorded. gabbio will be back soon for more bass tracks. dan is still recording guitars. antoine is working on keyboards. and i'm working on petty words.

lyrically and emotionally, it is a very sad album. loss. loneliness. especially loss. it is way more human than anything i've done in the past. hopefully it'll save my life.

we have also found an electroboy for our live shows, details coming soon! i'm also quite busy working on the rockfest... and antoine is now working at digital dimension in montreal, which is quite an accomplishment.

i'll try to keep updating the twitter account and not kill myself. if i succeed, you will all hear from me again soon.

wow it's been a long time since i made an update. a bunch of uninteresting things happened in the last couple of months, such as breakups, a near-psychosis, accidents, deaths, life-changing experiences, loneliness and trips to florida and las vegas. but whatever.

we played a shitty showcase in montreal last month i believe and we were supposed to play some secret gigs, but they got cancelled. thanks a lot. anyways, that's still not the point.

antoine and i have been working on songs and ideas for the new album. we are setting up our own studio in montebello and will begin recording next week. we will be working once again with dan pelletier who co-produced and recorded all guitars and bass tracks on Infected.

all i can say for now is that this album will blow your minds. i don't care how cliché it sounds, but this album will be the best ever. this album will be Deadly Apples at its best. it took 7 years to get here. the shitty tours, the constant changes of band members, the rage, the tears and a little bit of happiness.

this is the album of our lives. nothing else will matter once this album is recorded.

P.S. About the last blog, I have received a bunch of emails either approving what I wrote or basically threatening me. I must point out that I was aiming at a particular wave of recent bands in Quebec, not the genre and its bands as a whole. We are friends with and fans of many great industrial bands in Quebec which we highly respect. Hope this clears things a bit.

i'm gonna be sick

there are so many horrible bands in the industrial genre in quebec that it makes me really want to puke.

when i started out many years ago, Deadly Apples was basically the only band in quebec that incorporated some elements of industrial into our music. with the release of Infected last year, i believe i was able to redefine this dead genre with AL and make it my own, something fresh.

since earlier this year, i noticed many new industrial-goth-metal bands forming in montreal and quebec city, all influenced by our early work (as they said so themselves). it led me to believe that i had revived a long-lost form of music and i was proud of that achievement in a sense.

we were invited to tour with some of them and at first i thought it would be somewhat interesting. but i guess i was a little too optimistic. those bands are nothing more than shitty ripoffs of established artists. i realize now that we unwittingly spawned low-quality amateur music that is once again destroying this genre.

not all of them are that bad though, but most are, and i don't want DA to be associated with such mediocre garbage whatsoever. i now understand why people like Al Jourgensen and Trent Reznor tried so hard to get away from industrial in the mid-90's. they didn't want to be tied to the god-awful talentless crap bands that jumped on the bandwagon.

any idiot can pick up a guitar and write some generic tunes that have been already done countless times. few have the ability, intelligence and creativity to write something meaningful and fresh, which is what we are aiming for on the new DA album.

it felt good to rant, thank you.

first off, thanks to all our fans and friends who came out to the rockfest in montebello. as you have witnessed, we went back to our down and dirty performance. i truly missed that and it felt good. my mind is clearer now than it has ever been before. i thought i wouldn't enjoy these chaotic shows anymore because of that, but boy was i wrong. thanks again to everyone, it was an awesome concert.

we will be playing an electro-acoustic set at the Musiqu'en Nous festival in Montebello on August 12th with Karkwa, Capitaine Révolte and Konflit. except for Karkwa, all shows are free. we might also play some secret warm-up shows in small clubs... keep your eyes opened.

for those of you dying to hear some new material, be patient. it is coming along slowly, but surely. i've been busy as hell with my other baby (the rockfest). gabriel has been on vacation and antoine is still working on the music video for Self-Inflicted Oppression, and he will be playing on Friday at the Medley in montreal for a Radio-Canada concert.

once the electro-acoustic shows are done this summer, we will resume work in the studio. i will TRY to keep this blog updated more often.

thanks for all the kind words and emails all the time. lots of great things coming along for deadly apples, the rockfest and in my life in general. i'm still insane, but i'm starting to find happiness through my insanity i think. don't worry, i still have the hunger to destroy the world, i'm not going soft.

The show with Korn in New Hampshire was incredible. It was DA's first show in the U.S. and the biggest stage we ever played on. The crowd was great even though it was during daylight and we met lots of very cool people. It was also nice hanging out again with Munky from Korn - I hadn't seen him in nearly two years. And to top it off, Antoine and I had the chance of watching Korn's set on stage.

Thanks to everyone that came out, and hopefully we'll set up a full U.S. tour once we're done with our third album.

This is only the beginning of great things to come for Deadly Apples.

I have the pleasure to announce that Deadly Apples will be opening for Korn on May 23rd at the Rock On! Fest in Gilford, New Hampshire at the Meadowbrook U.S. Cellular Pavilion!

Tickets are on sale now for only $25.50 here. Make sure the code ROCKdeadlyapples is typed in! We will be playing during the afternoon on the Main Stage (in the amphitheatre); exact times will be posted the day before.

This does mean we are pretty much done touring for Infected. We are working on a lot of new material, which also explains the lack of touring lately.

DA is NOT playing at Bamboozle tomorrow

OK, I want to clear some things.

First, Deadly Apples WILL NOT be performing at Bamboozle Left with the Deftones in Irvine, California tomorrow. Somehow the rumor spread and I got loads of emails asking me about this. We were in talks, but ultimately it didn't work out and I have to say we were quite bummed about it.

Second, yes the music video for Self-Inflicted Oppression should be released very SOON.

I haven't updated this blog much lately, but rest assured we are not on vacation. We are working on a secret project that I will keep quiet for now. We are also rehearsing with our new guitar player, Gaube from Nevropop. And I am pretty busy myself with my other project, which is the Rockfest in Montebello.

Keep checking my updates on Twitter... although I still haven't figured out what's the point really.

Deadly Apples will be on REEL-Radio's Mardi Noir radio show on Tuesday March 10th starting at 9pm EST. The band will be there for the entire 2-hour show, chatting and performing songs from the electroacoustic set. The show is broadcast live here.

DA will also be featured of Vox TV's 'Rendez-vous VOX' on Thursday March 12th. They will be performing two songs and doing a short interview. The show airs at 6:30pm EST on Canal Vox Outaouais.

what a great experience

the blindoldfreak tour is over and what a great experience this was! as i stated in an earlier post, we will definitely be doing more electro-acoustic shows in the future. sometimes limiting ourselves with a few instruments and a minimal setting can be mind-blowing.

our thanks go out to Alessandro Cortini, Gabriel Duceppe, Random Transfer and Filter 27. special thanks also to the avant-garde bar in ottawa, really great people.

it was great meeting a lot of you! at the end of the tour, i had the chance of meeting Andy of Combichrist as well as Wes Borland of Black Light Burns/Marilyn Manson (and yes, Limp Bizkit), who really liked the artwork of Infected created by AL.

i probably get 50 emails a day asking me when will Deadly Apples be back in montreal. we will be back with a full headlining set on April 18 at Hémisphère Gauche with Daedalean Complex, Projekt F and more.

also, we will have yet another new guitar player. we will be auditioning a few pretty soon.

the crowd response to our brand-new electro-acoustic set has been great so far and we are gaining many new fans that might not be into our heavier side.

also, alessandro is a really cool guy and it's great to see him enjoy these small shows after touring arenas around the world with nine inch nails.

we definitely want to repeat this experience. but those who enjoy our usual chaos and destruction need not to fear as we will be back on the road starting in april with the full-on band/set to continue the touring cycle in support of Infected along with some of montreal's best industrial bands to open the shows.

NINE INCH NAILS keyboardist Alessandro Cortini will embark on his first solo tour under the name Blindoldfreak throughout Canada starting on January 31st. With this project, Cortini takes us into a very unique realm of sound exploration. Blindoldfreak is a voyage through sound in its purest form. In his own words, ''It’s just me and an electric music box (Buchla)''. From minimalist percussive gestures to highly layered rich drones, it will carry you away for a unique and memorable auditory journey.

The event will be presented on a 4 speakers surround setup for a unique and immersive sound experience. Opening acts on the tour include Deadly Apples, who will be performing a special stripped down set very different from their usual high-energy and distorted live shows. Also featured on the tour are Random Transfer, Kakihara079, Zilon, D/A A/D and Filter 27.

Welcome to the new website/blog of Deadly Apples!

By using this format, it will be easier and quicker for us to keep you updated with what's happening with DA.

Antoine, Gabriel et myself will be updating this blog with official news, updates, thoughts, images, random stuff and maybe preview some new music once in a while.

Except for official news postings, this will primarily be an 'at this moment' kind of deal, no overthinking or correcting. This is our way of staying close to our community of friends and fans.

Thanks to everyone for supporting or despising DA, it's been 6 years since I first started by myself when still in high school... and this band keeps evolving into something greater. And this is only the beginning. Stay tuned!
